With the realignment of the provincial roadway in North Holland, a 220 tonne tank defense system was left behind as a curious reminder of the second world war. The enormous piece of concrete was rezoned in a parking space for a local restaurant and could not be budged. Our solution was to accept and adapt! The design proposal reorganised the levels around the tank defences to enable parking and access through it. A pedestrian link with bridge joins the the main tourist trail with a new route to the restaurant. Finally we suggested replacing the steel asparagus (nickname for the steel spikes atop of the concrete) and fitting a small light to illuminate at night. Presented to and accepted by the monument commission North Holland.
