Invisible Work, Best Dutch Exhibition 2008 Award
- Location Netting Factory Apeldoorn
- Team Michael van Gessel, Patrick Mc Cabe, Rene van Engelenburg
- Year 2008
The dual exhibition “Invisible Work” by Michael van Gessel and Patrick McCabe promises to be special. www.youtube.com/watch The factory location appears empty as long as no-one is present and the exhibition therefore remains invisible. Until someone walks in. When a visitor enters the factory hall, a landscape unfurls before his feet. Sensors waiting to detect movement trigger projectors positioned 3 ½ meters over the floor. A total of 68 projectors weave a rich carpet of 1000 m2 across the expanse of the factory floor. The exhibition reveals the sources of inspiration and the completed works of both landscape architects.
Michael van Gessel
Michael van Gessel is acclaimed as a landscape architect who employs sensory perceptions like no other. His perceptions are translated with great sensitivity and realism into powerful, almost natural, designs. Michael van Gessel’s work is of historic significance. It is versatile and multifarious, from private gardens to urban planning. He lead the renovations of Valkenberg Park in Breda, the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam and the Twickel country estate near Hengelo. He also worked as supervisor over the design of public spaces in Amsterdam’s IJburg and Zuidelijke IJ-oevers and in Almere’s city centre.
Patrick McCabe
Michael van Gessel discovered Patrick McCabe during a project subsidised by the Fund for the Promotion of Architecture. In a project for the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (regeneration along the old military flooding line), McCabe’s brief was to develop a proposal for the Horstermeer Polder, an historic land reclamation area east of Nederhorst ten Berg. Van Gessel recognised in McCabe a design process similar to his own. “He observes and allows himself to be inspired by the location.” McCabe is Irish and moved to the Netherlands in 1996 after graduation in Dublin. He continued his landscape studies in Amsterdam’s Academy of Architecture. Prior to starting his own practice REDscape, he worked at Alle Hosper, H+N+S and the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer
