The task was to enhance the Quarter to deliver an improved public realm, climate adaptation, active travel, universal access and biodiversity. The transformation of the Georgian Quarter pivots on the principles of ‘new heritage’, in which contemporary urban uses and requirements are aligned with the intent of the historic setting.
Several open participation and walking sessions in Mitchelstown to ascertain the needs of residents and business people. De reacties waren energiek en enthousiast. Georgestraat (0.5km) is one of the streets proposed to be transformed with stakeholders from a highly trafficked road to a residential green street with active travel to become a welcoming and attractive link from King’s Square/ Kingston Place To St Georges’ Arts and Heritage Centre for residents and visitors alike.
The historic berms and natural stone drains, which had become degraded, were reinstated to ensure universal access. A sustainable urban drainage system was proposed to tie into the original system which collected water at the fountain for cattle at King’s Square. Parking has been reconfigured to accommodate cycle lanes and speed limits haven been lowered. Re planting of trees has been proposed for sick and poorly planted trees. A new energy efficient lighting system has been proposed.
Other components of the Quarter include. King Street has been redesigned into a safe, green street with trees and finishes that enhance the local architecture and urban layout and strengthen key axial views.
King’s Square and Kingston close have been transformed to reinstate the historic structure of Garden Square to make it more active, accessible and biodiverse.
