The Tolka greenway is part of wider vision to connect the city centre to the port, create the city’s third biggest park and strengthen Dublin’s biosphere.
The port receives more than 1.7 million visitors a year and is an important gateway to Ireland. The landscape plan for the greenway proposes a new vision for the port of Dublin, based on the objectives of the 2040 harbour master plan and the new internal infrastructure plan.
An interactive relationship between the port of Dublin and its surroundings is proposed to strengthen the integration of the port and the city. REDscape was invited to develop a masterplan vision for the port of Dublin as an exploration for new synergies between port, city and nature.
The greenway provides the buffer between the harbor and the highly protected and sensitive ecology in the bay. The greenway makes Dublin Harbor visually accessible to the public and is finished with a low wall of gabions and a stainless steel balustrade. An integrated lighting system in the handrail mimics the disruption of the biosphere.
A new concept, ‘port park’ was proposed by REDscape to develop a park around the periphery of the port using existing and new green areas. The greenway formed part of the northern periphery to link the port to the existing green areas of Eastpoint and Clontarf. The greenway would form a comfortable cycling and pedestrian route and open the interface between the port and the city. Its construction would make 3.5km of the bay (a biosphere) accessible to public for the first time. REDscape proposed to use the ecology of the bay as a starting point for the new design.
The greenway passes along the northern periphery of the port and ends at a linear park at the mouth of the river Liffey. The park commands spectacular views of Dublin Bay and acts a viewing podium for the arrival of commercial ferries and cruise ships. The port park vision seeks to connect both sides of the park across the Liffey, with a limited ferry service in the summer. This could be extended to connect visitors with the Bull Island visitor centre. The general masterplan of the greenway ties in with a heritage route developed by Dublin Port that connects various proposed maritime highlights such as the diving bell, the stones and redeveloped docks with other initiatives to attract more visitors to the port.
