The park plays a key role in climate resistance for the entire docklands area. During storm surges and cloud burst events large volumes of stormwater can be stored in the park, transforming its appearance, and making climate resistance a visible, living experience.
The Marina Park offers an exciting vision of dynamic water landscapes and ecosystems tailored to a modern and developing city. Consisting of a sequence of urban water gardens, watercourses and wetland areas for the new city park on the River Lee.
The winning design proposed Ireland’s first water park, which surrounds a new sports stadium and is to act as a catalyst for the redevelopment of Cork Docklands. Water forms the basis of the Marina Park and REDscape designed its fluid motion of pathways, planting and waterways to recall the Lee’s former wetland area. A piece of the former Agricultural Show Ground Building has become the inspiration for a focal pavilion in the centre of the park, its brash colour underpinning the traditional colours of this great city.
Although the planting has yet to reach its full ecological potential, the park is starting to enter the hearts and minds of Corkonians as a key destination for amenity, sports and culture. We are optimistic that the continued development of the Marina Park; the Marina (already largely pedestrianised) and other components of the masterplan (such as the former rail/ greenway to Shandon) as part of our transformation strategy, will deliver an even better park and more robust green infrastructure. This sentiment echoes the original vision for a city park on this site as set out by the city’s fathers in the previous century. This vision has now arrived and REDscape believes it should be carefully nurtured, especially by those parties located within the park, so that all Corkoninans can benefit from this fantastic blue green resource for generations to come.
