Sandlands, Amsterdam-Sloterdijk (NL) – Industrial and commercial space is becoming increasingly scarce, and the municipality of Amsterdam is looking for new ways to make full use of the industrial space we have. Under the supervision of architect Don Murphy, the Municipality of Amsterdam (DRO) has invited REDscape to develop a vision for the future management and use of the public domain in Sloterdijk III and the surrounding areas. Currently there are 58.5 hectares of plots available for development (until 2020) and 82 hectares of roads, greenery and water (20 hectares), which brings the potential area of the public domain to an area of 140.5 hectares, approximately 55% of the total area.
To investigate the landscape of Sloterdijk III, we selected five themes to focus on. These include: historical development, ecology, public domain, connections, and contact with the environment and the program. We developed a series of ideas and statements around these themes and brought them together into one vision for Sloterdijk III, the so-called “Sand Lands”.
With approximately 227 hectares, Sloterdijk III is one of the last large industrial areas in the city of Amsterdam. The area is located in the heart of the Amsterdam ports and borders the Spaarnwoude recreational area to the west and south. With the completion of the Westrandweg in 2012, a new highway will connect Sloterdijk III with Schiphol and the Amsterdam ring road, likely leading to a new influx of companies to the area. At the same time it will create a new belvedere on the harbor and an awareness of this largely undiscovered landscape. The WCG site was developed in the 1970s, it contains a mix of heavy and lighter industrial activities, including a number of important city functions such as the municipal incinerator and the water treatment plant.
