Buiksloterdijk Park offers a rain-proof solution for 2000 adjacent homes as a communal rain garden, creates ecological connections and incorporates natural and active amenity play areas for all ages for surrounding communities.
This proposal is based on a reprofiling of the existing dike. The current concept of a “dike in the park” is being transformed into a “dike park”. This changes the profile of the dyke on the south side into a gently sloping surface with a wet base for water storage. The spatial concept has the great added value that the entire width of the park is fully integrated and accessible to visitors. The height differences are used to create new opportunities for water storage, ecology, to realize sports and games. Water storage and ecology are merged at the foot of the dike in a ‘rain garden’. The ‘rain garden’ makes the Klaprozenbuurt ‘rainproof’. The rain garden adds a dynamic ecological system to the park and makes climate adaptation in the BuikSloterdijk Park visible and experienceable. 6500 m3 of water storage will be created excluding streets, parking lots and sports fields. We opt for water storage in the area that is mainly intended for ecology in order to strengthen biodiversity. This has the potential to add extra quality to the area and promote biodiversity. The rain garden is ideally managed by residents as a participation project.
The walking routes of the park and the dike are connected to the surrounding neighborhoods and the green structures are continued in the park. On the eastern side of the area, a special green bicycle-walking bridge connects the Marjoleijnbuurt with the dike park and the Buiksloterbreekpark. This will make the main green- and ecological structure of the Kadoelerscheg connected to the metropolitan green landscape.
Integration of sports and game elements and meeting places
A multifunctional sports field will be built in the Buiksloterdijkpark for the “Over het Y college”. The school can use it for gym lessons and outside school lessons the sports field is available to everyone. The new sports field with artificial grass is suitable for different types of sports. A very old dike with trees is located next to the Lindenlaan. In the new dike park, this landscape relic will be converted into a natural playground for young children. A multifunctional lawn in the middle of the land is suitable for games and small-scale events. It will have a natural setting that will be continued on the northwest side of the park.
A recognizable Waterland seawall for walkers and cyclists
The current latitude (about 7.50m) of the dike is used to create a pleasant route for walkers and cyclists with places to sit and relax. By planting the dike with an avenue of trees and improving the view of the former area outside the dike, the Waterland sea dike is always clearly recognizable.
