Our public realm design for a residential enclave on the climate dike combines contemporary village living with a biodiverse, green setting.
Imagine living on top of the Netherland’s newest climate dike!
The climate dike was delivered in 2019 as part of a wider national flood protection programme, “ Space for the Rivers”. Its key objective is to deliver more space for major rivers in the Netherlands to achieve better flood security, nature development and now housing. The green river was developed as a bypass to protect the city of Kampen. A new vilage called Reeve was planned for the dike and its urroundings. REDscape designed the landscape framework for the new village as part of the first masterplan draft for 1300 houses in 2008 with Bureau Alle Hosper. The Masterplan has been significantly adpated and densified with seveal iterations since.
Imagine living on top of the Netherland’s newest climate dike!
The design is inspired by hybridizing two Dutch urban typologies; the dike and the terp (raised mound) in a concept called ‘dijkerp’. The internal courtyard space is informal, intimate and child friendly, similar to a terp. The outside of the area has panoramic views to the landscape, similar to dike typologies. It uses village vernacular such as hedges, Delfste stoep, sidewalk gardens, trees and narrow pathways.
Play routes, neighborhood meeting points with picnic tables and sidewalk gardens are coupled with ‘ garden days’ to enhance community building. The edges of the enclave are planted with semi wild hedges on slopes which fix hundreds of tons of carbon per year and provide excellent habitats for nature. They also offer privacy to residents without disrupting views to the surroundings.
