Our design transformed an unused landfill site into a new community park and hot spot for local residents.
The park was designed as a green entrance to Valley Park neighbourhood. Located at the junction of several important amenity routes it has extensive views over the surrounding valley and canal. The history of many parks is sometimes the history of regenerating contaminated or unusable sites. Originally this site was to be rehabilitated as a high rise complex, but proved too expensive. Instead the waste on the site was sealed. and transformed. REDscape was invited to prepare a proposal with an innovative design solution into a landmark park – Point park that would create a new hotspot and complete the entrance area to Valley Park. Along the margins of the site are protected ecological areas and the site is near a cultural historical landscape monument.
The design sets out to explore the possibilities of the site for users and residents of the area. The dramatic views to the surroundings serve as an inspiration. The site was slightly elevated to distinguish it from the surrounding area and make the site universally accessible with a route to the apex and shortcuts to the surrounding areas. A folly in the form of stainless steel swings was added as an active attraction at the top of the site. The swings are 4m high and are suitable for adults as well as children.
The area has been raised to seal the waste and differentiate it from the surroudings. A new route takes the visitor the to the top of the former waste site. A splendid view over the surrounding valley awaits. A set of swinging benches allows the visitors to enjoy the view, and feel the exhileration of the place. Point park is accessible for strollers, joggers and peolple from the surrounding neighbourhood to come, meet and enjoy this unique vantage point as part of ther daily routine.
The park offers a variety of places, including steps, to exercise, sit or relax. It also is possible to walk along the canal edge, although these areas are dedicated to ecology. The Point is located next to the local jou de boule club and shares entrance links to the new park.
