Our vision for Church Square catalysed an unused non-space into a flexible play and event space to become the beating heart of Hoogeveen. The pools reduce heat stress and are located on the footprint of historic buildings.
REDscape’s vision for the revitalisation of Hoogeveen’s town centre public realm, including its main shopping street (3ha) was awarded the winning commission. The project includes a masterplan for the town centre and redesign of its main street and Church Square. Hoogeveen is a primary shopping destination in Drenthe which attracts shoppers and tourists from the wider region. The centre is set become compacter and to offer more atmosphere, experience and enjoyment. The design is to be underpinned by sustainable principles, making it more robust for future climatic conditions. Hoogeveen also aims to become the country’s most child friendly city.
Based on our recent masterplan for the centre of Hoogeveen, REDscape has produced a new design for Church square. The square is set to become a focal point of activity in the main street. Two mirror pools, with mist and fountains are located on the footprint of former buildings and serve as an informal play space. The city’s ambition is to become the most child friendly city in the Netherlands. The square is fully adaptable and will be used weekly markets and larger cultural events. The lighting design was developed together with Phillips. The spatial relationship between the former canal, the street and the facades is restored by replanting the trees on the former quays. In the vision of REDscape it becomes more compact, more atmospheric and enjoyable. The design is based on sustainability principles, making the area resistant to future climate conditions.
REDscape managed and organised the development of the masterplan and design of the park. REDscape form the primary mangers of the project for the design team and has overall responsibility for the design of the park.
