Within the newly diversified setting of urban landscapes, the students are empowered to initiate, shape and innovate their surroundings as a living lab. The landscape concept is shaped around three main notions: Edge Park as protected woodland, The Arboretum, as a mechanism to strengthen existing vegetation, and Landscape as an activity – introducing urban farming, botanical gardens, and ecological lab where relations between people and their environment is facilitated. REDscape applied many of the themes derived from its design research into the landscape of campuses. REDscape compared the development of campuses in Europe, US and Asia. The research explored the relationship between the university and the city the relationship between hi-tech development, logistical systems and public realm. We identified trends that accelerate the role of universities as strategic drivers for the knowledge economy. The creative campus for UCD applies the learnings as case study. Density is intensified, major nodes of research and exchange instigated and a green network with its own food and energy production provided.
