Construction of Temple Bar Square commences
Combining heritage and sustainability
Re-use of existing materials is a cornerstone of REDscape’s design for the square and surrounding streets. The plan is to be mainly resurfaced in refurbished Dublin setts. These were originally produced in local mines over a hundred years ago but were considered unsuitable for universal access. The city is currently removing the setts to have their tops sawn off to be re-laid as an even surface. The diorite setts have spectacular multicoloured blue, green, and grey hues. Our team sought to combine heritage with sustainability to develop a unique design with a reduced environmental impact. The re-use strategy serves the contemporary needs of a key space that receives over 22 million visitors a year.

Shortlisted for future campus
REDscape is collaborating on the masterplan for the access area to the Creativity and Innovation District of UCD as part of the UN Studio team, including Arup engineers and Mola architects. The district will include a new center for creative design to house an architecture faculty. The area covers 25 hectares and 5 hectares of surrounding lands. Six teams (selected from 98) will compete in the competition, including UN studios (NL), Studio Libeskind (US), Steven Holl Architects (US), O'Donnell + Tuomey (Ireland), John Ronan Architects (US), and Diller Scofidio + Renfro (US).
Creative campus
A REDscape research project compared the development of campuses in Europe, the US and Asia. The research examined the relationship between the university and the city and the relationship between technological developments, logistics systems and public space. As a result, trends have been identified that emphasize the role of universities as strategic drivers for the knowledge economy. The creative campus for University College Dublin applies the teachings as a case study. The density of the campus will be strengthened, important results of research and exchange will be stimulated and a green network with its own power supply and energy production will be developed.

REDscape wins selection for city center
In September, the selection for the redevelopment of public space in the city center of Hoogeveen was awarded to REDscape. The assignment includes the redevelopment of the main shopping street (3ha). Hoogeveen is a major shopping destination in Drenthe, attracting customers and tourists from the region. In REDscape’s vision, it will become more compact, more atmospheric and more enjoyable. The design is based on sustainability principles, making the area resilient to future climate conditions. In addition, Hoogeveen aims to become the most child-friendly city center in the country.
