Bastion Groningen is one of the seven bastions in the in 1583 built fortress Willemstad. Together with Bastion Gelderland, Bastion Groningen became in 1602 added to the fortifications. In 2019 After a broad consultation with residents and local parties, the municipality of Moerdijk formulated its vision on the fortifications of Willemstad. In this the bastion is like an important place, a pearl, appointed with a lot of improvement potential. Landscape architects REDscape and DaF architects have been invited by the municipality of Moerdijk and the city table to develop a new master plan for the bastion to make it more visible and accessible and to activate the location.
Vision
The design team proposes to take the layered and rich history of the bastion as a starting point in this development. The different elements on the bastion reflect successive periods in Willemstad's history. The design team found that not only had these stratifications melted into an inarticulate slurry, they also found that many of the bastion's qualities had been distorted over time., such as the routing of the paths and the profile of the works. The task is therefore to provide clarity and structure by unraveling and articulating the various historical elements..
Design
's plan drawing 1865 is the important reference to redefine the bastion in its main form. New connections improve access to the bastion from the city center, as well as moorings for boats from the harbor. The interior of the bastion has been transformed into an amphitheater where cultural activities can also take place. A Terre Square (flat ground) was defined to allow flexible use in the bastion. The military buildings (so-called ammunition buildings) we have studied the possibilities for new use. The team proposes to make them accessible again for public visits. Some amenities have been added (like water, electricity and toilets) to increase the flexibility of the fortress in the future. A panoramic table on the works at the mouth of the harbor provides a visual accent and a place to stay at the end of the walk. Here the original function of the bastions is explained in words and images.
